Carbon removes impurities, but ammonia isn't one of them.

That said, I don't use carbon except for short term. There are no proven benefits for long term use and some possible detrimental effects(it has tentatively been linked to hole-in-the-head), so why use it?

I keep it and zeolite on hand for emergencies, but haven't actually used either one for years.

I'm learning a lot. Too much... So there's a slime of sorts on my driftwood... anyone know what that is??? I'm changing the water tomorrow... the bloody driftwood has almost made my water red!

Nothing but time will cure the leaching of tannins. Boiling hastens it some, but it also opens things up to leach out even faster in a vicious circle. My normal procedure is to just soak it for a week or three, rinse it and drop it in. Not sure on the slime, but it's a fairly common occurrence. I usually have a pleco or two in my driftwood tanks, so it never lasts for me, they tend to scour the stuff right off.

I got a Betta. Black and blue male, named him Twilight. He's got some nice colors, I'll try to get a picture in. The tail on the fish is beautiful! Inbetween the the points in the tail(like a crowntail) there's a light blue skin with black dots... I'll try to get a decent pic. I'm redoing the 5 gallon though...

My betta is in his tank and still adjusting, but he seems to be happily exploring his space. For that I thank you petfish members for teaching me what I know. :thanks:

Is the tank fully cycled?  If so, how did you cycle it so quickly?  Bettas are not good fish to cycle a tank with.

READ LAST SENTENCE FIRST and save 3 minutes of your life. I liked the thought of cycling till I tried it. Not the best experience. My pH was off the charts, the water was almost red, so on and so forth. I just redid it. New decor, new gravel(natural looking gravel DEFINITELYrecommended), no more filter while Twilight is in the tank(little bugger hates it, he flares up when I put it in). I'm going to get more dechlorinater and maybe a different type of filter. The bacteria was too slow, and I didn't want to waste money on it. Also the food I added for ammonia was making it hard to look at the tank. And my fish is fine anyways, I'm still doing the frequent water changes, not overfeeding, and he's not in a little 8 oz. bowl. Long story short, I'm impatient and naive.

Just because he flares at the filter doesn't mean he hates it.  Bettas flare at everything.

The bacteria typically take 6-8 weeks to colonize.  I thought you were aware of that.

I would monitor your water parameters often and do water changes if there is ANY sign of ammonia.  You'll need to do full water changes in an uncycled tank otherwise you are just diluting the ammonia and not removing all of it.

This might help:  http://www.petfish.net/forum/index.php/topic,68269.0.html

I think he meant to skip most of his thread and just read the last sentence and that would explain everything.
