Tank Filter Not Running Right
« on: July 10, 2011, 05:47:12 PM »
I have a tank filter that came with a 55 gallon tank.  I'm attempting to use it on my 20 gallon.  It is an HOB with two sides that the water should be flowing out of.  The problem with it is that for some reason, the tube fills up with water as if it is starting up nicely, but as soon as the water gets completely through the tube to the filter part, it spits it all back out the tube and makes really loud crackling noises and puffs of tiny bubbles are shot out into the aquarium.  Is there anyone with some knowledge on filter mechanics that could tell me what is wrong?  I cleaned out the filter completely and the problem is not solved. :P

Have you filled the back portion with water? A lot of HOB's are no stronger than they have to be, especially "kit" filters. If the back is not full and it has to pull a full air vacuum, it may not be strong enough.
The instructions usually tell you to "prime" them by filling up the back with a cup or some such, but if you're like many of us, you've either forgotten where you put them or tossed them some time ago. :hihi:

Yep I did that too. Fill the filter part of the HOB with water while the filter is being turned on.

It worked! :D  It has been so long since I've set one up over again I forgot that part.  :P  I, however, decided to go back to a smaller filter.  This one was just too much for a poor 20 gallon.  The Platies were constantly having to swim against it unless they were almost in the opposite corners.  I'll just stick with the normal filter for now.
