HUGE endler female
« on: February 04, 2010, 06:24:04 PM »
I have a HUGE female endler. She is 2.25 inches long, and right now, VERY pregnant. She looks like a balloon with eyes and fins swimming around in there. She is a pure endler not mixed with guppies.

My question is, has anyone else had any pure endlers that got real big?

I've had a few females that got quite large, though I generally don't keep mine that long. I ship out the largest females to help slow down the population growth.

Well, she's even bigger now and there is a space on her chest that seems to be just skin, no scales. So her bulge just seems unnatural now. She is having a couple babies here and there, but no massive births. I wonder if something is wrong.

I'd take a picture but she seems healthy and is constantly moving, so the picture would not come out great. My camera is not good with moving objects, it has no settings for that.

Something must be wrong... I don't think I've ever had a pure Endler get quite that big.  The space on her chest could be a growth of some kind :(

It's not really a growth on her chest, it's her whole belly is expanding so much that the scales can no longer cover this area on her chest, so all I see now is skin. But because she is still so active, I'm guessing she is not in pain.

Oh, I also noticed the babies appearing in my tank are definitely larger than normal Endler babies, so I am assuming they are coming from this mother. (Tank has 2-3 females and 3-4 males.)

Raise the temperature it may cause her to drop her fry. it worked for my mollies when I had them. I will see if I can find the book that says how much to turn it up but you should be able to find it on the internet.

Me again. It seems I always have 1 or 2 female endlers that are real big in any given tank. I moved all my endlers to a 29g and there are 2-3 that are big as guppies now. It just seems to be a normal variation.

I don't mean they have a big belly, like they are gravid. I mean they are long and big proportionally.

Most of the females i've kept were 2/3rds or so larger than the males.
