Our old pony
« on: February 19, 2010, 06:38:32 AM »
Okay, so he's not mine, he belongs to the stable where I used to take lessons and at which I still work each Sunday.  I just wanted to share a picture of this fella.

This is Mickey Mouse, aka Mickey aka Mouse aka Moose aka The Pony.  Sometime this year, Mickey will be 49 years old.  That's beyond ancient, even for a pony:

Mickey's been working as a school horse at the stables longer than any of the humans currently there.  I know there are at least 3 cases where a young woman rode him while taking lessons, then her daughter rode him in lessons, and then her granddaughter rode the lil fella.

One of the local papers did an article on him recently.  It's not the most flattering and portrays him more as he was when he was younger and far more ornery.  Nowadays, he's quite the gentleman:

As I said, he's not my pet, but I couldn't love him any more even if he were.  The lil guy is a fixture at the barn.

Forty-nine?! They need to get in touch with Guiness, the oldest horse on record was 54 - if he makes it five more years, he'll be the new champion!

Sadly, Mickey died yesterday morning.  He'd been having some trouble getting up after he laid down to snooze in the pasture on Sunday morning, but was back to his usual self by afternoon.  Yesterday morning he was knelt down and dozing in his stall.  When one of the barn hands came by a bit later, the lil fella was dead.

Poor Mickey, he had a good long life and died peacefully in his home...  I'd call that a life well lived!

Sounds like he had a good life and left a lot of people with memories.
