My Shipment is coming Wednesday!
« on: November 16, 2009, 09:25:19 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am expecting a HM Cambodgian pair order to arrive Wednesday.

I will be working on Wednesday 11am-7pm. Either my boyfriend or his brother will place the bags containing the HM Bettas in their assigned tanks. The male will go in a ten gallon tank containing a filter and a heater set to 80. The female will go in another about 1.5 gallons unheated and no filter. When the male makes his bubble nest I will transfer the female to the ten gallon in one of the petstore bags for hours so she can adjust to the 80 tank temperature. Then I will move her into one of those net breeder holder in the ten gallon until she and the male are ready to mate.

So far this has cost me around $400 0_0.

When I get payed the "parents" will have 5 gallons tanks with heaters.
I have yet to buy the tank where I will keep the females.

The ten gallon has no cover which worries me, any ideas for a cheap thing to cover the ten gallon?

I will make a youtube vid when I get them and post the link.

when you breed you normally move both parents to a differnt tank. normally a 10 that only has like 5 inches of water in it. That way you can gentally add water or have a drip system to gradually raise the water level so you dont have to do a water change to quickly with fragile babies in the water. Plus I think there can be a territory issue if you move a female intro a males established tank. That one I'm not sure on though thats more of a guess seeing how females react to new girls in a sorority tank. As for a cover for a breeding tank I think if I rememeber right I used to just stretch some plastic wrap over the top of the tank to keep heat in but with the water so low it wasnt an issue it just kept out dust.

Yes I suppose that will keep the aggression down. when he blows his bubble nest and the female shows her signs....

--move the male into the tank gallon

--put the female in the safety net holder in the ten gallon

--wait til he accepts her then realize her?

I only have one heater at the moment and don't have enough to buy another one.

Would it be ok to put them in then turn the heater on? Or will it heat up to quickly and be a shock to them?

I have some last minute questions as well.

--How often do I feed the male and the female?
(I have dried bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp for them.)

--Should I heat the tank to 80 first and put them in bags to allow them to adjust to the temperature or should I put them in and turn the heater on?
(I only have one heater for my breeding tank...)

Once I get more cash I will buy 2 (5 gallons) tanks for them with heaters but for now I will just have to keep the heat turned up.

By the way, Nemo is doing fine. He did jump put of his cup and onto my hardwood floor (the cup was on the ground) when I was doing my Sunday 100% water change (I made Sunday my cleaning tank day...only day that I am sure I won't have to work. lol) For a while he seems a bit traumatized but is doing just fine. This morning he flared at me when I went over to him. He is a really pretty purple with pink this morning. I find it strange/amazing how his color changes to blue and purple, maybe it's the lighting?

Anyway, I have to catch the bus, off to work. I have 11am-7pm today. :(

Oh well, the people are awesome lol

And my manager and assistant manager wants to buy one of my male offspring.  ;D I am slowing working on my two co-workers. lol

You need to breed them in whatever tank the male has blown the bubblenest in.  The male will take care of the babies and make sure they stay in the nest until they are free swimming.  Also the parents need to be well conditioned with (preferably) live foods before you attempt to breed them.  You may want to do a bit more research before you attempt this,

You're going to need lots and lots of fry jars eventually.

Also you dont need to breed them right away. Take a breather, read the stuff on here and the site I sent you and cram as much info as you can into your head. It wont hurt your pair to wait a month while you get every single little thing you need to make the breeding as smooth and easy as possible.

Also you could end up with dozens and dozens of babies, and you need to be sure ahead of time that you will be able to either rehome them to have the space and money yourself to properly care for them.
