« on: November 15, 2009, 03:39:39 PM »
ok, so i was in the local pet store yesterday and saw this little beauty. and since i have always wanted a snake i decided to get her... i say her because thats what the container that they had her in said she was, though she could end up being a he one day later. she is about 8 in long.
btw this is my first snake, so advice will be greatly appreciated.. oh and i made sure she ate before i bought her. the last time she ate acording to their records was on the 30th of october, and i got her on the 14th. she ate a pinky, it was really cool to watch.

That is a nice normal. lol I give these guys away. ;)
Best thing to do is get the Kathy Love book, The Cornsnake Manual.

I would also follow this feeding routine.

The Roy Munson Plan
Quote
-When they're on single pinks (2-3g), I feed every 5-6 days. (Snake = 4-15g)
-Double pinks (3g x 2) every 5-6 days. (Snake = 16-23g)
-Small fuzzies (5-7g) every 6-7 days. (Snake = 24-30g)
-Regular fuzzies (7-9g) every 6-7 days (Snake = 30-50g)
-Hoppers (9-12g) every 6-7 days (Snake = 51-90g)
-Weaned (14-20g) every 7 days (Snake = 91-170g)
-Adult (20-30g) every 7-x days (Snake = 170+)

^ Hi, James!  nice to see you here!

Outcast, congrats on your new addition.  I wholeheartedly agree with Jim regarding Kathy Love's book.  In the meantime, give your snake a few days to settle in before handling.  The store should not have fed her  before sending her out the door as the stress could have easily caused her to regurg, and that starts a battle you don't want to deal with.

Well, its been done and actually the snake has surpassed the safe time. So its probably doing well. But typically wait 48 hours before holding your baby after feeding. So about 2-3 days and you should be good.

she is doing great. she didnt regurge, i wait at least 48 hours before handling after i feed her. she is very active at night. i am hoping to breed her to a speckled kingsnake one day, if i cannot find a hybrid of that type before hand, though i would much rather breed her to a charcoal colored corn. she seems to have a very calm and collected personality. i really enjoy having her, she is really cool.

Well you better start learning and you will have 3 years before you can really breed this snake. It sounds like this is your first snake and well, Keep on reading and gain some experience because Corn and King Crosses can equal lunch. Your female being lunch for your king. Male kings tend to be more aggressive than females and if this is a female you may get a failed attempt and a dead corn.

I recommend getting another corn and breed those together first. Breed the corns and know them before you try your "amazing" Crosses. Trust me you will thank me in a few years for this advice. Plus Crosses are frowned upon in the hobby. I only have 1 corn cross here and it was due to a friend giving it to me.

So read the book that I recommended to you and talk to us again in 3 years about breeding. Know the 3 system for corns, 3 feet, 3 years and 300 grams for breeding. .
Also, breeding your snake to a Anery B Corn may and probably will give you Normals and a few Anerys. But I doubt you will get what you want from this snake.

honestly, i just want to see what her babies would look like. i plan on getting a speckled king one day, as soon as i can find one in New Mexico for a reasonable price. yes she is my first snake, i know the dangers of trying to breed with a kingsnake. as much as i would like to try a breeding between the king and the corn, i wont, its not worth loosing my snake over, i will leave that kind of breeding to those who know more about that sort of stuff.
thank you for the book refrence i am going to amazon to look for it now.

Odds are, it would look something like this or atleast close. This is a Mexican Black King X Corn Cross.
