Amazing what some people will do....
Here in central Texas, the word is "Don't go do that stuff in Williamson county!" (This is where I live...Georgetown is the county seat.) ... they throw the book at you if at all possible. Now in Travis County (Austin area, just south of us), they commonly get a slap on the wrist, and are sent off with probation. A couple of years ago, the Georgetown police chief's daughter (very wild and rebellious) got picked up on a drug charge, and apparently kicked an officer.... Did daddy ride to the rescue? Nope... he left her in jail... You do the crime, you do the time.
An example... (and I admit, this is hearsay, but probably pretty true.. I haven't verified it)...
Some folks were trying some shoplifting at Lakeline Mall.... if I remember the story correctly, one person faked a seizure, and while everyone's attention was on the person, her accomplices were busy shoplifting stuff....
Well, they got caught... and picked up for a ride to the police...
They're driving along, and realize the police car (or sheriff car) isn't going to Austin, but is heading north (toward Georgetown, where I live.. Williamson county). "Wait, aren't you going the wrong way? Austin is the other way!" Officer response.... You're in Williamson county at Lakeline mall, not Travis county... (and it also isn't in Austin city limits).... We're going to Georgetown.
Not only did they prosecute them for shoplifting... they also got them on "organized crime" in some way, since there were 3 of them... Maybe a state jail felony, instead of misdemeanor shoplifting? I don't know the whole story, I admit..
Whoo, Hoo... go, Williamson county law enforcement! Let's clean up this county!
BTW... for those of you that are into history.... Back in the 20's, the first SUCCESSFUL prosecution of a KKK member that resulted in jail time happened right here in Georgetown.. Williamson county, TX. This was the first time in history nationwide!
"Dan Moody and his Williamson County legal team successfully prosecuted members of the Ku Klux Klan in the infamous Burleson flogging case. The trial took place in the early 1920s in the 26th District Courtroom of the Williamson County courthouse in Georgetown. This marked the first prosecution of the KKK that resulted in jail time. " Dan Moody went on to be elected the youngest governor in Texas (age 33) and clean up corruption state wide in Texas.
