Water parameters are 0 across the board, pH is 6.5. I just finished treating my boyfriend's betta for Velvet on Saturday. (I treated with Maracide and 1/4tsp. of salt for 5 days.) I decided I'd give him a break for a week in water sans salt and Aquari-Sol as I did with my betta the week prior. Last night I noticed what looked like the beginning of Columnaris on his pectoral fins.

However today the whitish tendrils are gone and there is a halo left around them hardly visible with the eye. Could this just be a shedding of the excess slime coat he developed from the addition of salt, the Chitosan in the Maracide or both?  shrug

I'm not sure how to proceed because I don't want to over-medicate but on the other hand I've lost a betta to Columnaris in the past. His appetite is normal and doesn't display any other signs of illness that I know of. I'll be picking up Maracyn in a couple of hours. Should I also pick up a medicated food as well? I picked up Maracyn, Maracyn II and Jungle Anti-Bacteria Medicated Food.

Thanks in advance.

***UPDATE 11/14/09***
Resumed use of salt and just started my usual addition of salt + Aquari-Sol preventative. Excess slime coat is completely gone. No sign of Columnaris or other illness. Thanks again! Smiley

It looks like he is probably ok. A break from the antibiotics might do some good. However I would continue with the salt myself.

Thanks, I'll re-start the salt and keep an eye on him.  Smiley

I agree - for now I'd just keep a very close eye on him.

I'd like to also say WOW on the quality of those pics!  How on earth did you take such close up, clear pics of him?

Thanks! I used a Sony DSC-T200. It's just a point-and-shoot but it has a nice super macro function. As far as how; I guess I got lucky. He likes to hang out at the front of the glass and isn't afraid of the flash.  Smiley
