hey everyone, currently I got a 90g and a 55g and another 55g but it has a bearded dragon in it, my friends wanting to trade me a 40g long terrarium for my 55g tank, hes needs to buy a hood for the 55g becuase I dont have one, Glass canopy is really cheap only about 40 dollars with a plastic hood with cutouts for the 55g is 80 dollars he wants to save some money and get the glass canopy I told him to wait and lets see whats going on first befoe we make the trade and you get into spending alot of moneu, iv told him i got over 1000 dollars in both the tanks i got with fish in them now, but heres where the real delemia is at nither of us have ever used a glass canopy before and it looks like theres no room for a filter or anything like that to hang on the side without removing one of the 2 glass tops, do you guys use canister filters or something that are on the inside of the tank for those types of hoods and how much do they cost, that way I can let him know what hes getting into, i dont think its a good idea i see him spending to much money on the tank, i think it will cost around 300 dollars just to set it up.

Most glass canopies don't cover the whole top. They have a plastic strip on the rear that you can cut to fit whatever needs to go into the tank.

I am using both cannister filters (intake & outtake tubes need to go in) & HOB filters (the outflow lip hangs on the inside of the tank below the canopy) & various other cords & tubes also can be accomidated by cutting the plastic strip.

Of course this works only if you plan on having your equipment at the rear of the tank.

What light fixture is he going to use. I find that to be potetially the most expensive piece.

yeh man oh man light fixtures on my 55g i got up and running now is 65 dollars, he was going to use one of those little like kitchen light fixtures for like flrousent black lights and other flrousent lights i think its like 18inches maybe 20 inches long and he was going to put it either behind the tank or hang it from his ceiling...is that ok for fish to have that kind of light or do you need a hood light. Also about the glass canopy, i didnt know that the back part was plastic thought it was glass too thats sweet to know, so i guess we could use a jigsaw and cut out the back side of it, for his filter and heater.

If you are talking about "shop lights" then definitely yes. Home improvement stores such as Home Depot, Lowes etc. have them.
On some of my earlier setups (st least for my 55gs) I hung 2 48" shoplights from the ceiling. (I think the fixtures cost me a total of $30) I has a total of 4x40w flourescents for a total 160w of lighting. I needed that as the tanks were planted. Might be something to keep in my if live plants are involved.

thanks you defintly been helpful, and its like a shop light but its prettier lol.shop light is a good idea i know hes got a few just laying around. thanks alot, we will be going to the pet store soon and talking to see if he really should spend the money or not, im trying to talk him out of it just simply becuase he dosnt have a job right now becuase he just quit his job at quacker barrel, it shouldnt cost to much though about 40-50 for filter 20 for heater and about 15 for chemicals and 5 for food and proply 20 for fish unless he gets bigger fish so about 110 that isnt bad really x.x
