So, during one of Callen (Sandypup) and myself's oddly random phone conversations; somehow sponge filters came up... well then we were discussing how to make them, she gave her way of making it, and I went with that and sort of expanded it... so what Im thinking is: Supplies coffee can (the plastic ones not the metal ones) sponges, floss, etc 1/4 - 1/2 cup of gravel air line tubing and pump plastic tube
Construction
drill random holes through the sides of the coffee can, put the gravel in the bottom as a wieght, fill with the filtering media. drill hole in the center of the coffee can lid, thread the airline tubing into the can. punch out a hole for the plastic tube to go through, and silicone it in place (this is so the bubbles from the pump can leave the can in one area) attach the airline tubing to the pump, turn it on, and watch it go.
is this even anywhere near making sense? in my head I see how it could work... but, since Ive never done anythign DIY related to fishkeeping, I though Id run it by yall first... let me know what yall think....!

Sounds more like a box filter. It would probably work best if the holes were punched only in the lid of the container, so the water is drawn through from top to bottom. The gravel iteself could be the biomedia, with floss on top for mech filtration that you can discard when it gets clogged. See also: http://www.nhaquariumsociety.com/Articles/Homemade%20Box%20Filters.htm for some ideas on other homebrew filters.

Yes, the bubbles from the air pump pulls water through the holes in the filter. Show us your finished product!

Will do! I'll probably do one of those step-by-step things to show exactly how I do it...

I think you would need a perforated plate below the gravel to act as a free flow area. That would make the unit more efficient.

Essabee, how would I install this? just a raised plastic disk with holes drilld in it and put the gravel on top?
