I am posting this because most people it seems prefer the black as I always have.  I inherited a 55, and it had a planted look background, I am still building up decor and am hoping to come across a large piece of driftwood or "shipwreck" ornament.
I keep moving things, plants around to make it look less bare, but I didn't like the bacground so I tried black and didn't like that either.  I went bare back, (My Bowfront Cichlid tank is bare back and I like the effect there) and it looks nicer to me.
I know alot of people think black makes the fish calmer and colors stand out more but I am liking no back ground more and more>  Anyone Else?

I just took a black plastic bag and taped it to the back of my 29 gallon tank... I couldn't get it completely smooth, so the small wrinkles and ripples makes it look like the background is made of slate...

I've really enjoyed that background...  not sure why, but I really like it.

I have no background on my hex because, well, because it's a hex and would look odd.  But it's so heavily planted that it doesn't really need a background anyhow.

I have blue backgrounds on my small minibow betta tanks and it looks nice and hides the equipment cords.  I think the cords are why many people use backgrounds.

I don't mind the cords because they are usually hidden behind some plants or something.  I put the planted background back on for now because the gouramis are probably a little stressed.  I also added floating plants.  I will take the background back off possibly when the tank is how I want it.

I've got a black background on my 38 gallon both to keep the cords out of sight and because I figured it would kind of add to an illusion of depth and help the danios stand out a bit.

My two bettas in their little 2.5 gallon tanks have no backgrounds.

For backgrounds I usually either:
1. Paint the back of the tank blue - black works as well but isn't as as nice in my opinion. Green is also a fairly decent choice but blue is definitely the best I have found. This option looks fairly good and never has to be replaced or retaped etc.
2. Use christmas paper. Reflective blue paper with no design is the best. This has the best look in my opinion but sometimes gets wet or the tape comes off.
3. Use the backgrounds they sell in the stores. These are a little pricey but some of them can look just as good as the christmas paper but are designed to withstand getting wet. They still have the problem with taping up.

Just a note on the taping of these backgrounds. A person posted on this site a long time ago about using vegetable oil. Cut the background to exact size and cover with a light coating of vegetable oil, then stick to the back of the tank. This does work fairly well as it keeps the air space from between the tank and the background, making it more vivid. However I find this a bit messy and although I haven't tested it long term, I suspect it has to be reapplied as well.

I've tried a few different background and I've found that I like the planted ones best because the provide a little bit of depth.

Get a piece of rigid card board and paint it. Easy to replace and cheap.
