Just noticed another post, sorry about that.

I would like to setup my first aquarium and have decided on a small tank of African Dwarf Clawed Frogs.

(1) Is a 5 gallon workable or should I get a 10 gallon?

(2) Does the tank have to be fully cycled before they are put in?

(3) What is a a good filter for this species?

In a lot of states ACF's are illegal.  They will kill most other frogs and fish in a stream and pond.  Someone let them go in a pond in Golden Gate Park (SF) and they mated and ate all the native frogs and started to spread to other water areas.  They were afraid that they would spread to the bay.
I like the look of them.  There is a tank in a favorite restaurant of mine in Dallas.  They have a Goldfish tank 80g with two ACL.  Since they are not real active for frogs the fish add a nice touch. They are both the size of a softball.  Hope the article above answers most of your questions.

The original post regarded african dwarf frogs, not african clawed frogs.

Here's a basic link regarding care and maintenance of ADFs:  http://aquaticfrogs.tripod.com/id13.html

It's recommended to give these guys ~1 gallon per frog, so you could set up 5 in a five gallon.  (Frankly, 10 gallon tanks are often cheaper to acquire than 5 gallons.  Since they're more commonly sold, their prices are lower in stores, and you could probably find one on craigslist for a very reasonable price, since many people start w/ them and then upgrade to a larger size.)

One thing I might want to try is having ADF and RCS (red cherry shrimp), which would clean up the debris.  It's not impossible that the rcs would get eaten, but in a well planted tank, they could cohabitate, and you wouldn't have to worry as much about leftover food polluting the water.

Good luck to you.  These are very fun frogs.  My only other advice is to visit the petstore to check in on these frogs a few days in a row before purchasing them.  They're handled pretty roughly, and if you watch them over a few days, you'll get a better sense of their health before taking them home.

Awesome replies, thanks so much. I live in Ontario Canada so there are no laws here about keeping them, wouldn't be good to dump them in a river or pond for sure.
