Hi every one, I have been to several fish stores  and asked about the veil tail gold fish, some have look at me strange and said they only sail them in the winter.  Another person said that fan tail are the same thing and I know they are not.  Why are they so hard to find? Does any one know of a sight where I can order some. I live in M.D.  I did not see any one on this sight that was a breeder of the veil tails.  It is really discouraging  when not only can you not find what you are looking for but when every one you talk to keeps telling you how terribly  filthy  they are would personally never get one. This coming from people at the fish  store!   Thanks to any one that can help.

Hi there,

I don't know where M.D. is, so can't comment on specifics, but I suggest you contact the local goldfish fanciers club or breeders association or whatever and ask them.  If you have trouble finding their details, look for local aquarists clubs in general, as I'm sure they will be able to put you in touch with some goldfish breeders.

The veiltail is such a specialised breed that I doubt you would find them in a pet shop, though you might find some fantails with veiltail characteristics - one of mine definitely has them.  It's like how you wouldn't consider buying a real pedigree dog from a pet store - they only have mixtures, or animals of uncertain ancestry.  If you want the good stuff you have to go directly to a breeder.

I'm actually glad to hear of pet shops advising people against buying goldfish.  They must be one of the most mis-sold and consequently mistreated animals out there.  So many of them are sold in tiny 5 gallon tanks Sad  It's nice to hear of a shop actually advising people that goldfish are messy animals, as hopefully it will encourage more people to buy large aquariums for their goldies!

Good luck in your search.

A "true" Veiltail is hard to find, even when people tell you its a true veiltail its almost always not. The fish's giant tail is very hard to care for and like all goldfish its messy and dirty. You need a gentle yet powerful filter for a fish like this and it has to be kept with slower fish like itself. Its quite the hassle.

However if you really want one I suggest you look internationally, Japan and China has a lot of goldfish breeders who if you pay well, will ship internationally. Or you can look to the US (most of my fish are from here.. lol) for exotic and rare fish breeders. Anyway as helenf had mentioned, ask you local club for some extra info.

I'm having the same trouble here in NJ!

Seahorses are easier to buy than veiltail golfish!

Any links to a source (breeder? ) would help!
