Platies and mollies are often confused my bettas to be other bettas because of their bright colors; sometimes they get along, but often they don't.

Either way, with a 5 gallon tank you're really only limited to a snail, shrimp, or perhaps a few white cloud mountain minnows.

I agree, if you'd like some larger tank mates, why not upgrade to a 10 gallon?  The kits for the 10 gallons are pretty cheap at walmart, and many of the kits come with decent lighting (for plants), a nice filter and a heater.  Then maybe you could try some platies or something.  For now though, how bout a couple Brigdesii snails?  they come in all sorts of colors (even purple, I get these at work all the time as "albino"  someone at the fish farm is color blind or something!) and get about the size of a golf ball.  You would have to feed them differently, but they're still very cool.
what kind of tetras did you try and why didn't you like them?  maybe we can give you some better suggestions.

How about some white cloud minnows,
You could go with a group of 3.
Another option is an apple snail,
or maybe an oto.

well, I'm sorry to say then that you are limited to smaller tank mates for your betta friend.  I know that can be frustrating.
Have you seen white clouds before?  They are really pretty and come in a gold morph too that's lovely.

I second (or third, or fourth?) the white cloud suggestion; I have a school in with my female betta in my five gallon hex, and they're actually really neat. Smiley
