EWWW! Well, I found it difficult the first couple of times I used it and then I just "got it". There's a technique that works every time (UNLESS THE WATER LEVEL IS TOO LOW). Starts right up.

I've never gotten it either, but as long as you stop sucking after you get the water over the "hump" no fish water in the mouth.  Though I doubt my water straight from the tap is much better!

Hmm, if you guys are using the cheapo regular ones that they sell everywhere then it should be easy to get it started. First take the end with the big plastic piece that you use to clean the gravel with and fill it with water. Now hold up the piece and the water should start to travel down the tube, as soon as that's happening put the plastic piece back under water but at an upperward angle to the air that caught in it gets out and it fill up with water again. Your siphon should be started.

You might have already known that, but it's really simple to get a siphon started once you do it a few times.
