lol!  I can't count how many times I've had that happen to me!  It's worse with salt water though.  Bleh!  Did that at work once and of course, couldn't just spit right away because there were customers.  So, I had to tactfully walk to the bathroom with a mouthfull of yucko salt water (python was being used for another system).  eeew.

I really thought that they coudln't siphon on the floor!  That's good to know I was wrong, and i can tell the hubby he was wrong too!

they do but they're SLOW, and once the water level in the dirty water bucket gets higher than the level in the tank it about dies.

Just a quick update!

I'm seeing some growth, though it's slower than I would like.  All the fry have their ventrals too, so that makes me happy.  There's about an even mix of light and dark bodied fry, with no color yet on the lights.  I just pulled the largest light out to jar today so I could keep a better eye on him.  He seems a bit stressed by the move (I used aprox 75% of the grow out water for his jar, and the rest some water I had floating in a specimine cup just for this purpose) but I think he'll be ok.  His belly is nice and full, which is great because I had to use some frozen bbs as I had to toss an entire batch of live becuase my cats found it and drank out of it.  Yuck!  Dumb cats.  Anyhow, I didn't want any of their mouth bacteria to infect the bbs (even though I'm sure it's not possible) but I figured better safe than sorry!

A big thanks again to everyone for helping me out.  I'm eternally grateful.
My next project is using the 46 gallon tank I will be dismanteling next week as a grow out tank.  I'm having better luck with the larger water volumes, and I figure if I set up a specific grow out tank of that size with sponge filter (or something) I will have little to no problem with water quality and have to worry less about diluting growth inhibiting hormones in the water.  And anyhow, bigger is better huh?

Anyhow, the fry I just jarred is not very big, but definitely almost twice the size he was 2 weeks ago!  His anal and ventral fins have delveloped nicely too.  I know I didn't need to jar it at this size, but I wanted it upstairs to keep track of his development more closely.  He'll be getting daily changes of 100% once I wean him off of the grow out water.

Sorry to interrupt here. I am puzzled about the "suck and start" siphons you are using. I have a simple 2 dollar wal-mart siphon that you just pump up and down a couple of times and the water starts flowing. No mouth involved, no technology either. What are you guys using? I wouldn't want fish tank water in my mouth ever.

those are pretty much the same thing but many if not most of us aren't as lucky to get this water draining fuction to start by using the pump up and down motion. never worked for me Sad

Yeah, mine was made to do the up and down thing, but I never have gotten it to work like that.  Just got to suck between your hand and the tube, and then get out of the way and put the end in the bucket. lol sometimes it is hard to be fast enough.
