What do goldfish fry look like?
« on: August 28, 2006, 02:16:14 PM »
Hello!
I have an outdoor pond with 7 common goldfish, a fantail, an oranda, and 2 koi.  They are all about 4-5 inches.  The pond is very well planted.
About a month ago I brought some plants inside to put in an aquarium and a few days later I found 4 fry.  I still have them and they must be goldfish.  Yesterday, I brought in a water hyacinth and now there are more fry.  Unless there are flying fish around that come to my pond at night, lay eggs, and then fly away again (I highly doubt it, LOL), they must be goldfish.
I thought that they only spawned during Spring.  Do goldfishfish this small even spawn?  Does this make sense?  What else could they possibly be?
If it would help I could take a few pics, but most fry all look alike anyways.

Sept. 1 EDIT:  We have established that they are goldfish fry.  I will keep taking pictures of them to show how they develop into beautiful (hopefully! lol) adult goldfish.

Got any pics?  It is possible to have fry from them this size.  Goldfish can spawn as early as age 2.  Usually their spawn is triggered by a rise in temps (like springtime), did you have a bit of a cold spell, then back to warm temps in the last month or so?  Are you going to raise the fry?
pics please!
And if you can catch any of those flying fish, send me some eggs!  lol!
On the serious side, it's possible that you've got some other type of fish in there.  Eggs may have been transported on any plants you added this year or you may have even gotten some livebearers somehow.  You never know, but fry pics will help.

Hi!
I don't  think we have had a cold spell.  It's been pretty steadily warm.  Maybe just enough of a fluctuation for them though. :-\
I am definitely going to try to raise them.  The original 4 from a month ago are doing great!  The tank that they are in is VERY natural so they get a lot of naturally occuring live food.  If I actually tried to put more effort into raising them right now, it would just be a hindrance.
I did get new plants this Spring.  Hmmmmm..... I guess there is a possibility there.
I tried to get a picture.  The quality is fairly poor because they wouldn't stop moving and I had to be zoomed in so far.  It might help though.
Thanks!

Looks like comet fry to me, but we'll have to see when they're a bit older.  Yay, babies!

Thanks for your expertise!  ;D
The surface of my pond is about 75% covered with water hyacinth.  This morning when I fed the fish I kind of pulled some of them apart and I saw more fry!  They must love the hyacinth's roots; they seem perfect for hiding places.  I will try to net out as many as I can and see if I can raise some fry again.  I have done it a few years ago, but that was in June when they are "supposed" to spawn.  I will keep you updated!

LOL
Yeah, I could take regular pics.  Do you have any suggestions for getting quality pics?
It would be cool if there were a couple of oranda or fantail fry in there!  It is possible for them to spawn with commons, right?
