What do the rays mean?

it's just the genetic variation of the shape of a crowntail's caudal fin (the fin on the back, or often just called the tail). if you look on aquabid or anywhere else that showcases CT bettas, you'll notice that there are single rays, double rays, cross rays, combtail rays (result of a crowntail and a veiltail parent), etc.

It IS possible to have a fish with uneven ray branching yes, its not considered a desirable trait however.  If you can get a clear picture of your fish's tail it often makes it easier to tell how many rays in a photo than in person.

Now that is the best explanation ive heard and now I understand it totally! (hopefully XD)
My crowntail female has 2 rays... =D
and my male veiltail only has 1 lol :s
I havent been able to check my other female.. shes just a tad bit too shy hehe
