Back when I kept my common in a tank I fed her a bit of orange occasionally. She didn't care for it much, though. shrug But what she REALLY REALLY LOVED was finely chopped zucchini! Just the white insides, though, the skins were tough for her to chew. I alternated zucchini, pellets, and flakes and she loved it.

Yes, actually, they can.  Well, that is what I've read in a previous post here on petfish.  My petsmart feeds them ANY table scraps that are either fruit or a vegitable.  Such as peaches and plums.  I sure those are NOT what fish can consume safely.

PetsMart is actualy only supposed to feed the following things to goldfish (and pleco, herbivorous AF Cichlids, and Otos)
1. zuchini
2. romaine lettuce (mainly only to koi)
3. orange slices
4. apple peel, not really the 'meat' though
