I have no ruler but these nigripinnis seem pretty small. That may also be my fault.

On the gardneri, I'm not sure as to why. You seem to be giving them better care than me. Mine are in a 2.5 gallon critter keeper with water 7.5 GH/KH of 8(just what comes from the tap). Fed micropellets, normal fish flakes, blackworms, daphnia, earthworms. No filtration, but 80% water changes about once a week. Are your gardneri also 'Misaje'? I can't really judge the color intensity on my fish but it does change alot. In some lighting conditions the male will look almost brown till the light hits his sides correctly.

Here's some photos of the nigripinnis. Let me know what you think. I heard from someone who saw the breeders that this isn't a very good strain of nigripinnis. Small, not very black, and not many spots compared to better strains.
The spawning container  (2 liter soda bottle).

Today I stuck both males in to see what would happen. Male on the left ended up victorious after intense displaying and some fighting, but nothing too serious. Impressive since he was the second male introduced after the first male had 2 dives with the female. Soon as he was in the first immediately challenged him. Afterward I removed the first male and left the male on the left in with the female. Guess I will be using him most frequently for breeding from here on out. Perhaps a way of selecting the better fish?

Dominant male, now trying to convince the female to give just a few extra eggs. He would stick himself into the peat head first waving his tail and if the female was convinced she would do a headstand beside him and they would both "dig" into the peat.

Apologies about the photo quality but taking photos into a soda bottle using a desk lamp for lighting(hence the yellow/green look) doesn't work to well. In life the fish are a kind of purplish black with green or blue irridescence and blue spots.

Straightjacketstar: Nice Fundulus you've got there! Mummichog especially.

Thanks noname.  Grin

Are you serious? 2 liter bottle??? Jeez that's incredible. I've seen these Cynolebias in books and adored them and just happen to have an empty 2.5gl tank lying around. Would I be able to keep a few in there fo as long as they live? Would so rock!

2 liter bottle is only a temporary spot but I left a male in their for a few days and he didn't seem to mind.

You could keep a few in a tank around that size.

Just an update. I had to leave for a week and thus got rid of the gardneri and nigripinnis (gave them to a friend). He is collecting eggs from the gardneri (they are Mamfensis Faishang, by the way), I am not sure what was the trigger that made them lay more than 50 eggs in just a couple of days after he got them. The nigripinnis are colouring up and he told me he can now distinguish at least some males and females to guarantee their breeding.

I am no expert in killis but your nigripinnis look pale to me. However, breeding them on a soda bottle seems interesting Grin

Right now I am raising some Rivulus xiphidius and Plataplochilus ngaensis but they seem to grow really slow. I still have some N. rachovii eggs incubating so I guess I will be busy in the following weeks trying to hatch them.

REgards,

Tony

PS: Another pic of my sjo in a more natural tone.

Clint: Yes, the splendopleure are descendants of your fish. The only current survivor of the 4 you sent is the large male in my avatar...he looks like he is slowly going downhill though. However they left plenty enough offspring for me to continue these guys.

Tony: Wow that is one nice SJO! Makes me miss the ones I had. How old?
Great stuff on the gardneri...killies can be odd! Are you finding xiphidus difficult?...I hear it is tough to master breeding/raising those.

Not sure how dark nigripinnis are supposed to be but the flash did lighten them up in those photos. The big male was lighter in color than the small one and he died recently...the small one is still up and running. I think these show a rather small number of spots...though the smaller male is better in that regard.

Yes, I love my SJO more than any other fish I have ever had. He is exactly one year old (was born around June 2nd, 2005) and measures about 4-5 inches. Yes, gardneris got me wondering what was wrong with them in my aquarium but I am glad that my friend is keeping them breeding. Xiphidius? Men, I am having trouble keeping them alive, they grow extremely slow and I have not lost any of them (8 fry) but they act weird, they seem to be dead when I change the water but later on they are OK, staying under the salvinia plants. Give me a couple of months and I will let you know....

As I mentioned, I have no experience with nigripinnis other than hatching and raising for a couple of weeks. One thing I noticed is that they seem to be bellysliders because they tend to stay in the bottom of the raising container but once they grow up they are perfectly normal, at least that was my experience. Something similar happened to me with the gardneri, I though there were several bellysliders but all of them came out OK.

Regards,

Tony
