this might sound weird but if you could scare it you might be able to tell, look for vertical stripes it might be hard to see on a light colored fish but males don't do this. to "scare" them put an actual male next to the tank. they do this when scared or being submissive.

Some males do stripe up though, it's just harder to tell when they're darker. My boy Churro stripes up all the time :P

Well, today I thought I saw an ovipositor but I also saw it flare at the bloodworms floating in the tank.  The only way I can get it to settle down and let me look at it is if I feed it so in another few hours, I'll feed it again and have another look.  I'd prefer it be a plakat but either way, I'm happy with the fish.  Its coloring up nicely, the body is yellow and the fins have pale blue/yellow striping.

my Plaket has a white stripe right where the oviposter would be, AND the base of his pec fins are white.  Drove me nuts trying to decide whether he was a plaket or a female.  I was 99% sure he was a plaket when I bought him, I put him in a breeder net in the sorority tank as a temp home....and all 4 girls went into complete display, making up my mind that I WASN'T seeing things and he really is a plaket

I guess I could find something to house it inside one of my female tanks and see if it gets motivated to build a bubble nest or if the girls react to it.

Even if it is a female, its too big to house with my juvie CTFs and I'm not adding anymore fish to my other tank so its going to be housed alone.  Its got its own 5g tank right now but that will probably change in the future.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, I've never seen any of my really light colored fish bar up and this one is no exception.  One of my red males gets stress bars and most of my blue or red females do but my light colored fish just get pale.

at this point i'd just let him be, and get used to his/her new home, and THEN try to decide what you've got!

I'm very excited.  I came home from work today to find a very small bubblenest in its tank.  As I'm typing this I'm watching it work away at it.  Its still not a real impressive nest but its getting pretty thick.

Still jumpy but after the frozen bloodworms today, I think its warming up to me. ;D

Even though our female has been known to fatten up, build her very own bubble nest, drop eggs, then catch and carry them up to the nest, I'm certain you've got a boy.  And one that likes his new home, too!  Congratulations!
