Melafix?
« on: June 04, 2005, 06:06:27 AM »
So I am wondering if I should start giving Eggplant Melafix instead of Bettafix.  I have read that Bettafix is a watered down version of Melafix so maybe he would heal better if I used the better product?
I just ran out of Bettafix so I was going to petstore to get more since his tail has another hole.  Should I get Melafix?  If so, how much do you put into a 2.5 gallon tank with a filter.

Thanks,
Angela

Yeah, and Melafix will last you a lot longer.  Just follow the dosing instructions on the bottle and use some small measuring spoons.

i don't think it is necessarily better... you just have to use less, therefore as said above it will last longer.

is he over the rot or are you planning to use melafix to treat it? melafix is best used for after the rot is cured. but fresh clean water with some aquarium salt works just as good for alot less$
i'm in my own happy little world. dont worry. they know me there.

To dose melafix I endup diluting it anyway. it says 1tsp treats 10 gal. I start with 1/2 tsp and dilute it with 4 more 2 tsp of water (this is a 1:5 dilution) then 1/2 tsp treats 1 gal of water. In your case 1/4 tsp should be a 2.5 gal dose)

(Im not sure of the scientific soundness of the next part) I keep the dilution in a small bottle covered with foil (melafix is light sensative- hense the blue bottle) and use it in later doses. Im doing frequent water changes to nurse a sick betta back to health so this saves me some time. It is possible that melafix loses activity after 24 hours or so in the water so this dilution is actualy inactive.. Im writing the company right now to find out.

Why would you not use the full dosage?  I disagree with that.  I also am not sure why you're going to the trouble of diluting the melafix?

Hi.  I bought it today but I am worried about using too much!  Can someone please help with the exact dosage.  He is in a 2.5 gallon tank.  I just want to make sure I don't put too much in and hurt him.

I am not treating for rot cause he doesn't have it anymore..I am treating for healing the fin due to a tear and now a weird hole in his fin.

I read about the 2/3 of the dose on the bottle and then I read about the diluting it but I worry about which to do!!!

Thanks,
Angela

I'm looking at my bottle now and I don't see where it states to use 2/3 the dosage??
I would use as suggested at the dose of 1 tsp. for 10 gallons.  If you have a 2.5 gal, that dose would be 1/4 tsp.
