How did you do the surgery, did you have to take him out of the water? Just interested, never heard of it before :)

well...usually they say you're suppose to trim the straggly fins, then you can use  Mercurochrome to help kill some bacteria on the fins...

well I was all set...had my really damp papertowel ready, really sharp, sterilized scissors...I gently placed him on the damp papertowels, and folded them over so I could get a good hold on him.  He didn't flop around much, until I was cutting the strands.  I was so stressed for him, i wanted to get it done as quickly as possible...I couldn't get the last bottom strand if my life depended on it...and after trying to separate it, i gave up and just wanted to get cooper back in his water.  Well, after he was sittin back in his tank, i completely forgot to use the  Mercurochrome!  oh well...better trimmed than having them get infected more.

It was a trying process...luckily the strand that I couldn't get, eventually fell off a couple days later....

Awww, poor baby!  He looks so sad.  But you probably did the best by doing that.  Hopefully he'll heal up fast and start growing back some fins.
