I am curious. Does anybody else not use carbon in their filters. I don't use them unles there is a real need for it.

As i think about it, I found i've went from using it about half the time  to putting it in to remove medication when the dosaging's over. part of the reason for my weaning off using carbon was.. i've got too many tanks and couldn't afford the carbon Cheesy lol.  then it went to forgetting to use it or just being lazy to use it. either way it hasn't been necessary; though on occassion it does brighten up / clear up the water (making it a bit clearer on occassion)

Yeah I was using it to simply polish my water but then i would forget to replace it in one of my tanks and it would begin to leach.

I only use it to remove meds. I have a planted tank and I heard it can really mess up the fertilization schedule.

I use it in two of my tanks-one of them has a filter I bought used and it came with a pack of those pads that you can't open up and change the media so as soon as I'm done with those pads I'm switching to something else.  I want to put some crushed coral in the filter of that tank but I don't want to buy a giant bag of it.

Chrissy, some of the mom and pop type fish places seem to be offering cups of the crushed coral for that reason, look at your local places. Otherwise there are a small number of online stores that are offering small amounts of crushed coral. (I use it in my fiters on my main tank and as a substrate in my growout tank and love it!)

I haven't used it in many tanks(and in the one I have it in it just sits around doing nothing).

I never touch the stuff. Don't need it unless I'm removing meds.

Thanks Yvette, I'll have to look around at some of the smaller places by me.
