My balloon molly is even bigger than the first picture!  I thought it was prego!  She is a great fish - Princess, according to my daughter!  I was wondering when to put her in the breeding tank just to be safe.  Today I lost my sword tail's fry as I second guessed myself and left her in the big tank. By the time I got home, she had the fry and none were left.   She still has the dark spot on her and I read that they will have babies again without the male - how long does it take?

You'd be surprised at how well the babies hide... they sink into the gravel and stay there, venturing out only as necessary.

The best thing is to provide some kind of cover......  plant cover, preferably.  If you aren't comfortable with live plants, you can get some "breeder grass" which looks kind of like clumps of grass, maybe 1 1/2" tall... plastic, kind of looks like cheap artificial grass.

Anything that lets the babies hide will help.

Not easy to get pictures of these guys, they are so quick! But I baited them with an algae pellet and weeded through the snaps. Here's what my tank is full of!

Enjoy

Just some Petco mutts! I have been doing a little bit of selective breeding (really negatively-selective selling to the LFS).. I basically started with some random females, and one yellow albino male (snake skin? he's pictured in that photo set) and one of the metallic blue males. I sell the females after a few breedings, and I sell the males that aren't heading the way I like- randomly and very subjectively.

The newest look are the albino looking ones with the red stripe on backs. I like them a lot! We'll see where it goes..

^They look great. Especially against the green backdrop & dark substrate.
Looks like a lot of females in that one shot. Overrun with fry yet? Or do you control population by culling & selling to the LFS?

Get your facts first! Then you can distort them as you please. You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way & the only way, it does not exist.

Ah I see, well they look very good for mutts, it's always fun to see what you get through guppy genetics. Can't wait to see more pics of the future generations.

Here are my babies.  The pictures aren't that great but it's a bit difficult to take pictures of fish that won't stay still.  Billy and Wally are the new guys that I didn't plan on getting right away.  Ricky is way too energetic and he kept pestering Daniel and Rex.  He's calmed down now since adding the new guys.  I'm going to try to get better photos of them since they don't like to pose for the camera the way my betta does.

Daniel(dark blue) and Rex(orange tail)

Billy.  He wouldn't stay still for me.  I believe he's a guppy/endler hybrid because of his bright colors and he's so small!

Both! Whenever it looks like I'm getting overrun, I feed less and the fry start to disappear. I assume the guppies are eating them, but I haven't seen it. Also, I will take some to the LFS, where I get some small amount of credit for them, but she only wants them almost fully grown as her filter system will suck up small fishes. So if I can tell that some are not turning out the way I want them, I will cull them if they are large enough to see how they are growing, and small enough that she doesn't want them at the LFS.
