I just recently bought a used book, the english version which I have is copyrighted 1972. I was looking in the aquarium diseases section and they said:

Caused by: Plistophora hyphessobryconis
Primarily attack neon tetras and other characins, but other groups can be infected.
The fish swims about restlessly and lack appetite, and in neon tetra there may be a characteristic discoloration. The spores often settle on fins so that when the fishes nip each other the spores are transferred from one to the other.
It is hardly possible to cure this disease, but it can be combated to a certain extent by keeping the fishes for a "fortnight" in a solution of euflavin and methylene blue.

Has anyone else ever heard this? I just thought maybe it might help.

Yah its something fairly common when neons are being discussed.

First time I've ever seen a possible cure mentioned although it seems more of a prevetative measure then an actual cure.

Still, I'll sticky this post.

One of my black neon tetras is acting kinda twitchy and he looks pale compared to his buddies. He has isolated himself in the tank and hasn't been eating anything that I have noticed. I started poking around on the web last night and stumbled across the neon tetra disease. The info I found said that its not a curable disease, and that I should euthanize him as quickly as possible so the disease doesn't spread to the rest of the tank.
Im still a novice when it comes to fish. I don't want to misdiognose (sp) him and kill him with out knowing more about it. What do those symptoms sound like to you?

Any info would be apprectiated.

You might want to start another thread to get more help, since it's off topic on this thread.

Maybe try doing a google search for "neon tetras with neon tetra disease", "fish with neon tetra disease", or "neon tetra disease".

I really don't know anything about the neon tetra disease besides the fact that it is practically incurable. Undecided

From what little I've read about it so far, the initial outbreak is usually in fish that are weakened by stress.  Generally poor water quality or a sudden swing in water chemistry seems to be blamed as the primary culprit.  Once even a single fish has contracted it, it can pass it on to others if it is nipped at, or if the body is consumed upon passing.

Again though, I've done only the briefest of reading on the subject and am far from an expert..
