What is infurosia? I can't seem to find anything about this type of food? Nor does my pet store have any information on this? Can't find it in the dictionary either.

Infusoria is a minute, I mean tiny, usually one-celled organism used to feed very small fry.

We have also had several betta fry born, but keep loosing them. Out of the last batch, we have 1 left, out of about 80. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We seem to loose the fry in about the 2nd week. From the 1st spawning we have 2.

If the fry are making it to the 2nd week you won't have to worry about infusoria, they're just for very tiny newborn (hatched) fry.Your problem is probably a disease called "Velvet", next time try adding about a teaspoon of salt for every gallon in the fry tank and it will keep velvet away.

We also have a pink tailed shark - this is what it was named at the pet shop and several pet shops in the area have the same name, but we can't find anything about it in any of the fish books that we have - Is it possibly a cross breed?

I've not heard of a pink tailed shark, but I would guess it to be a albino Red-Tailed Shark. See if you can find a picture or live specimen of a red-tailed shark and you can decide if thats what you have.

I have a tank with cardinal tetras black neon tetras pristilla tetras and guppys and baby plays and the cardinals seem to have little golden spots on them it started on the tail and is going on to the body what is this???? please help

I know exactly what it is, it's called "Velvet", it's a parasite similar to ich (ick). You can cure it by adding a teaspoon of salt per gallon or buying a fish parasite medicine with copper as the main ingredient. Anyway you need to act fast, it spreads very quick. Good Luck,

Clint;
My fry are one-week old in a haft-full 10 gal tank. Everything went well until yesterday, I start seeing some of them lying lifelessly at bottom. This happens to me every time. The only thing I can think of is I may overfeed them with microworm. I also reduced temperature from 80-78 the day before.I just added another inch of water. Do you have any suggestion of why and how to save them.
Thank's a lot

Baby Bettas are prone to get "Velvet" or oodinium, the standard cure is to add a teaspoon of salt per gallon and that should do it. You might also add a drop per gallon of any of the standard aquarium medicines that contain copper.
I alway kept lots of live microworms with baby bettas, I would siphon the bottom of the tank clean every afternoon and then add new live microworms. They will really grow fast if live food is always available. This will all get easier with practise.

i have a small tank for my son. it is 5 gallons with undergravel and mechanical filters. we have 4, 1/2 in, tiger barbs in the tank. what other fish can go in the tank to add some different fish to the tank.

Your tank is almost maxed out. You could probably add one more fish and that would be it. I'd recommend a Corydoras catfish, he will get along with the barbs and will clean up the extra food on the bottom of the tank and add some activity to the lower regions.

Hello
I write in desperation and hope that you will be able to help me. I bought my husband a male Siamese fish some months ago. He is very active and we have never had any problems with him.He shares the tank with other fish (mainly goldfish and a female Siamese fish). Lately he seems to be getting bigger, almost like a balloon. The problem is contained to the stomach area and beneath him. He is getting bigger every day, his scales are stretching and taking on almost a transparent look. He is still fairly active and eats okay, but it seems that he has not gone to the toilet for some time. His stomach is getting bigger and bigger and seems as if it will burst. What could it be and how can we fix it?
I hope you can help.

I'm sorry to tell you but your fish almost definitely has a disease called dropsy, it is almost always fatal. It is possible (but unlikely) that he could be cured with a product called"Maracin II", you can get it at a local petshop. Also you'll need to isolate him from the other fish so that they don't catch it too. I'm sorry I can't help much, this disease is caused by a kidney failure and happens from time to time to almost everyone who keeps fish for any length of time, so don't blame yourself.
I do hope you are able to cure him.

Good Evening,
I have one lonely Betta, don't know if it is a male or female, HELP!!!! How do I tell the difference?? We adopted this fish from our daughter who lost interest in good old Henry or Henriettra ha ha. We have had him/her for almost 3 years now. How long do these fish normally live? Of late, he/she has been just hanging around the top of the tank and not doing much else other than that. It almost seems as if the body is keeping it in that position. If you have any suggestions on how I can get this poor little fish to start swimming around again it would be most appreciated.
Thank you for your assistance on this matter.

Sorry to tell you that your Betta has lived about as long as any I've ever heard of, the normal life span of a Betta is about 2 years. You might try adding a teaspoon of salt per gallon to his water as it tends to be a good cure-all. If it has long flowing fins it's a male. I wish you good luck, your Betta has been a lucky fish to have been so well taken care of for so long. Maybe he will recover to swim another year. Please let me know how it turns out.
Note: I have since heard several people tell of Bettas that live up to 5 years. The most unforgettable was a person who kept his Bettas alone in 10 gallon tanks and exercised them daily by chasing them around the tank with a fish net. (2-08-2002)

Hello there I really enjoyed your article I have had a couple of 5 gallon salt water tanks myself for over 9 years I started using them back when they said it couldn't be done U said that U couldn't find any protein skimmers that would work on the tank I used the power protein skimmer that U use to be able to buy that hung on the back of the tank I bought them real cheap from a pet store that I use to go to regularly because they thought that they wouldn't work but after doing a little bit of converting on them by running the air hose threw the top of the skimmer it did a real nice job and and have even converted a couple of hanging power filters that do a great job U also said something about algae growing and keeping it in check I took care of this problem bye introducing Sailfin Mollies into the tank and has worked great for me they have even bread for me and the fry are great to fed to my black Volitan since they live a longer period in salt water than most feeders ( well have to get rid of the fry some how can only give so many to pet stores) thanks for your time and keep the good work up and will help people get into salt water that can normally not afford it

Great idea about the mollies, I'm going to try that myself. Thanks for the great feedback,
mind if I use it on the website?

My two sail fin mollies are not doing well - they are shaking from side to side. I did a water change, added salt ( 1 tablespoon/10 gallons) and they are still not well. What can I do? Please help.

The term for the way they are acting is "shimmies".It's usually because either they are cold or need a water change. So you can raise their water temperature and see if that helps, (they like it at about 80 F 26.5 C) if not try changing about 20 to 30 % of their water, but continue the salt treatment. They should get better.

I need help with my betta. my betta doesn't eat a lot. also it sometimes just stands still for on the bottom of its jar for several minutes without movement. also it has like white bump stuff all around its face.my friend says its something called "velvet". i don't know what it is. there is nothing wrong with my bettas color though. what is wrong with my betta ?
Please help.

Yes he has velvet, put a teaspoon full of salt (regular old table salt) in his jar. Add it a little at a time, maybe 1/4 a teaspoon every hour. The salt will cure Velvet almost every time.
