E-Mail Questions About Bettas, Part 2
Hi,
I have a 29 gallon tank with 1 pearl gourami, 1 blue gourami, 4 danios, and 2 cory cats. Would it be ok to add a Bala Shark to this aquarium? Also I am thinking of breeding Pearl Gouramis and Bettas. How do you tell male Pearls from females. I have something called a Betta Barracks that holds 4 male Bettas. Can I keep this in the same tank with the females?

Yes I think the Bala would be fine, I'd get a small one though.
Male pearls have a red throat region, and slightly longer fins.
Yes, you can keep the male Bettas in the barracks with the females loose in the same tank, if one gets out you'll have some eggs, if two get out you'll have a fight on your hands. Also in the presence of the females the males will flare (display) a lot more, but thats a good thing.

I have a lonely male Betta, besides the mirror trick what fish can I add to the 2 gallon tank. Can I leave a female Betta in the tank? Or will they fight? Please help.

He's not really all that lonely. It's nothing to worry about. Yes, he would fight a female unless she was ready to spawn, in that case he would still fight with the female as soon as breeding was finished. You could add: a Corydoras Catfish, or a Pair of Zebra Danios, or a pair of Neon Tetras etc. Any small short-finned nonagressive fish would do, (Male bettas sometimes think that long-finned fish are rival males). The male bettas only fight with their own species, most other agressive fish would pick on the bettas long fins.

Hello, My name is J~.
I have just recently started raising Bettas (about 2 mos. or so). And as appears to be the case with alot of people, I am wanting to start a breeding program. On my first attempt. I hit a wall and now feel that I may have given up on the participants too soon. Perhaps it was because I was afraid that I might lose one of them because of the inability to maintain a constant watch over them. (I work @ night, therefore sleep all day.) Now, that I look back at it, I don't feel that she was quite ready. I've been observing her for the last two or three days and she has gotten more plump. I had him in the 10 gal. tank and had her floating in the tank in a betta tank. After he built a nest, I let her out, but broke up part of the nest doing so. Then in his attempt to court her, they broke up the rest. As time went on, he seemed to lose interest in her. She hid, while he went around the tank without really acknowledging her presence. Now that she appears to be more ready, I'm wanting to try again. FYI- These are store bought fish. My question is, Will he build another nest? Or should I try another little tough guy? Also. I think I would like to set her outside the tank this time. Will this be as effective.?He wasn't very aggressive, so I think my fear of losing either one at the beginning, has somewhat subsided.

The "normal" spawn of Bettas is rare, there's always seems to be something going wrong or different than expected. You should definately try again. If the male hasn't been overly rough with the female then go ahead and leave them together for a while. The male will build another nest if he's happy with the water and temperature, and that's usually the biggest problem, I know from experience that most Bettas are really in the mood when the temp is around 82 degrees F. Adding some live foods or frozen brineshrimp to their diet would help also.

Hi, my Betta fish is no longer eating, is sluggish and his color has faded quite a bit. do you know what is causing this and if it can be treated? Info would be greatly appreciated, thanks alot

I suspect your Betta has a disease called Velvet. It is a common disease of Bettas that will crop up every so often. Anyway the cures are
1. Add a teaspoon of salt (regular old table salt will do) to each gallon of water in the tank or bowl.
2. Get a fish medicine made for "Velvet" or "Oodinium" "Ich" etc, try to find one that has copper as an ingredient cause it really kills these diseases off. I think your Betta will recover soon if you use either of the cures above.
