Have You Considered the Axolotl

Believe it or not, but the Axolotl can make a great pet, and a unique one at that. For those of you still wondering what the heck an Axolotl is, well just keep reading and you might just want one for yourself.

The Axolotl is native to Mexico and is essentially an aquatic salamander with some astounding characteristics. One notable characteristic is that Axolotls remain in a juvenile form even as a full grown adult, however, they are still able to breed. Axolotls have gills but also possess lungs with which they can use to breathe. The feature of the salamander that is most interesting is its healing ability: the axolotl does not heal by scarring and is capable of the regeneration of limbs, and, in some cases, more vital structures. In color their range includes: white, black, grey, tan and brown.

As a pet, the Axolotl is relatively easy to look after. They should be housed in a decent sized tank, at least 8 – 10 gallons in size, with at least 6 inches (150mm) of water in the tank at all times. It is also advisable to cover the tank, or you may find yourself with a stray Axolotl. The tank water should be changed on a weekly basis and any tapwater being used should be treated with some type of dechlorinator (as chlorine is harmful to Axolotls). The ideal temperature for an Axolotl will be somewhere between 15 - 18°C.

Axolotls are carniverous and enjoy a diet of worms, insects and small fish. They can also be fed some types of pet food. Since the Axolotl will try and eat smaller creatures, it is not advisable to house other fish with the Axolotl or they may end up as dinner.

Axolotls do make an enjoyable pet and a good friend for their owner. They are a unique creature and very interesting to own and observe. They are also very popular and amusing for the kids. The other great benefit of the Axolotl is they are cheap, ranging anywhere from $15 - $30. If you also need a tank, this will set you back another $100 - $300, depending on size.

So head down to your local pet store and check one out, you may just end up buying one.
